Martha McCallum is doing great filling in for joe...and David seems happier.

Are you kidding? The best thing Martha McCallum is doing for us is to make us appreciate how good Joe is. And I wouldn't say David sounds "happier". It's true that he no longer sounds disgusted when he has to correct her on air reports, now he simply sounds resigned to it. The latest was this morning when she had SBC's wireless merger as a fait accompli when it had simply been reported that they were in talks. She didn't cite her source either. And just now, her report consisted of reading a list of analyst upgrades with a couple of by the numbers earnings reports tossed in. No indication that she even had a clue what any of these companies did, or why anyone might be interested. They could have at least put it on a teleprompter for her so she didn't have to bury her nose in the piece of paper she was reading from. This is not what I turn on Squawk Box for.

I don't mean to pick on Martha. She's doing a better job in this spot than 99% of the blow dried newsreader set would. She was probably picked for this spot because of the criticism of Squawk Box for not having a woman in one of the stock reporting spots. I don't disagree with the idea of adding a woman to the mix, and their previous sub for this spot (Pisani) really wasn't a good fit. However, I don't think Martha is the woman for the job here. Liz Clayman gets my vote for taking a shot at it.
