And the question I'm working on is an approach to decide whether the Gap has been discounted by an early (premature?) rise in a gorilla' market cap--which will limit the longer term outperformance in the face of the eventual demise of the CAP.

Exactly.

The approach would be a thorough discount cash flow analysis that you're willing to place your bets on. I still haven't gotten to the stuff at capatcolumbia.com but that's the stuff you're talking about in my opinion.
