Off topic --- but only a bit ...

I've been messing about with moving averages the other day. I wanted to know how successful I would've been if I'd bought when MSFT crosses the MA going up and selling when the MA is crossed going down. I tried this with MAs from 2 to 2000 days and only a few MAs were profitable, and none beat buy-and-hold by enough to pay transaction costs. Interestingly, 7 day MA gave one of the best results.

I tried this with some other stocks and the results were the same, except for one that had NO profitable MA.

I messed with a 'momentum' trading program, buying on a rising MA and selling on a falling MA. This produced the same dismal results.

Cheers, PW.

P.S. I'm looking for an idiot proof method of managing my portfolio because for certain, some day, an idiot will be managing it.
