Just for background, there's been a lot of coverage in the NYT over the last few days on the simmering China/Taiwan story. Today's big story is nytimes.com, look for the sidebar links for much more. There was also big background article in the Sunday Week in Review, nytimes.com .

None of these seem to pick up on the nuclear threat story, but they don't exactly soft pedal China's belligerence on the issue. But even if that story was genuine, it would be easier to read it as posturing. Or else it's the most monumental misreading of American domestic politics imaginable by the Chinese. Or maybe it's Maoist hotheads trying to sabotage closer ties to the West from that end. Or maybe they're just nuts, although there hasn't been much indication of that otherwise.
