It was the nuclear threat story that I found most interesting. I did see several news sources saying that (and I am working from memory here) that the official Chinese government paper made vague threats of unspecified violence against unnamed third parties if they intervened to aid Taiwan, but nothing like the specificity of the Washington Times story. I don't know if you read the story in the Washington Times, but the author, Bill Gertz, was quoting unnamed sources in the Pentagon. I doubt that Gertz can read Mandarin, and I have no idea whether his source could, either. At any rate, it certainly got my attention, it was the lead story on the front page of the paper. I slept in yesterday because I wasn't feeling well, and it was rather a shock for my morning-coffee-and-paper. I did feel less threatened when I read reports that China is only estimated to have 24 intercontinental ICBMs, but living just outside Washington, D.C., one sometimes feels a bit like a sitting duck. One reason I favor so-called "Star Wars" anti-missile technology.
