re: No wonder Dell will be #2 in China soon.

China's native computer business has both the runaway lead position and the support of government and tradition. I don't expect ANY foreign company to gain any significant share in the China PC market. IBM currently has the lead among foreign companies. CPQ has concentrated on infrastructure plays and largely ignored the PC business while they snap up banking, telecom, and manufacturing business.

I can't see how the "direct" model plays in China without the infrastructure to support it even on a level playing field, let alone one where the non-native companies are in a "three legged sack race" compared to government subsidised and sponsored companies in track shoes.

In a market where almost no one has a PC, 2 year old technology is just right - costs are very low and vendors set the stage for controlled refresh of whatever base they can establish. I'm surprised they are selling PIIs, Pentium 200s would be just fine...
