Check out one of the help sites such as learn2.com or how.com. You go to learn about, say, home improvement, and there you see a bunch of ads for home improvement products and services.

Yes, those are profitable.

In my mind, I compare websites like that to magazines. Field & Stream contains many advertisements for fishing poles, for example. New York magazine contains advertisements for New Yorkers. They don't command a billion dollar market cap, though.
