Tench,

<Alpha Rob! Long time, no see! I kind of missed your insights.>

Thanks Tench... laying low as Alpha is nearing an
inflection point ( ;-) ) with Wildfire on near term
horizon and EV68 finally showing up this summer.

<Compaq will use an eight way system based on Foster (Willamette) and then will migrate that model to the
future Intel McKinley model.

Interesting. Compaq reckons there is so much growth in the eight way market, as its sales figures have proved,
that it makes more sense to migrate the eight way model to McKinley, kind of leaving Itanium for the Itaniates>

----

It could also be that Intel isn't developing an 8-way chipset for Merced/Itanium. Intel does have an 870 chipset
coming for McKinley and Foster, though, and that will be 8-way.

-----

True... but Compaq doesn't use Intel's current 8-way
chipset (good thing too huh?) and more than likely
could develop a working (ouch) 8-way chipset for Itanium
if they saw a market for it. However, why even throw
the resources at chipsets for Itanium when Itanium
is Dead-On-Arrival (more accurately such a small segment
, why bother?)
