For months, Dubya had a huge lead over Gore. He still beats him. McCain has detracted from that, for the time being, but is still pretty evenly splitting the Independent vote, which is key. Once McCain is not a factor, the numbers will go up for Bush against Gore. If McCain goes third party, he will ruin his career, but he may do it, and you are right, that would cause a lot of trouble. Anyway, broad support among Republicans also translates into support among non- "far right" Republicans, and belies the idea that he is a "captive". If one has broad support, one cannot be a captive.......
