PalmPilot in Novell's world
Hello Paul,

Working from your thoughts of the PalmPilot and an app that Novell could leverage from this platform...well, Novell is all about network management tools and guess WHO USES PALMPILOTS?

Network Administrators!

Ok, perhaps I can not do the more intricate network management processes from the Palm than I can from say ConsoleOne or NWADMIN but a simple app or SUITE OF APPS that could provide me the ability to manage network resources would be a very good first step.

Sample Application Ideas:
- IP Addressing (make DHCP/DNS entries/changes)
- Password Management App (change PW or other attributes of account security)
- Simple Object Creation (create an object or a string of objects)
- Server Manager (Send a command to the prompt of a specified server - such as a script or NLM or DSTRACE)
- Link ManageWise to send alerts to PalmPilots!
- Object Attribute changes
(Here's an example: drop down menu for object, context sensitive drop down for attribute then a text box for the information input - don't forget the OK or CANCEL buttons).

I am sure there are many more instances of how one could develop apps on the PalmPilot that could extend management of network resources to this platform. Of course the key to all of this is adding wireless technology to the Palm unit and a conduit to your network for that wireless access so this limits the scope of this "solution".

[Of course, 3Com is also selling a cradle for Palm units that attaches directly to the network cabling (ethernet) instead of a PC but that may not be what we are looking at]

This would be the first place I would look to extend the Palm into Novell's world. After that, end users could use some sort of digitalme integration for things like addressbook, datebook etc.

If you want to a company that is leveraging GroupWise (and more) and the PalmPilot, check out Puma Technology (http://www.pumatech.com).

Their InSync software connects users to their GroupWise accounts and syncs the information there to their PalmPilot. I can sync my addressbook, my calendar, my ToDo and Memo Lists all by pressing my HotSync Button!

Next step - personal directory information that I can SYNC with my PalmPilot which then becomes a VERY powerful identity device. I can use the Palm for transactions (Beam the CC info to a POS system -> IR security is not currently available though), for Identity (driver's license please!) and just about anything else I may need to prove who I am.

Of course the Palm would then need some biometric add-on or other "key" to activate those capabilities (voice authentication?) to make this idea secure....

Too much thinking today...
