We pulled our Ambassador out and placed one there from the Phillipines and lied to him telling him that the Shah was a Mean Cruel Man' when in fact that country was westernized under his rule.

Well, first of all, our change of ambassadors - regardless of what they thought of the Shah - would not have been anywhere nearly enough to create the kind of massive and continuous street demonstrations that brought down the Shah. US Ambassadors do not have the power to bring down rulers.

Second, the Shah may have been nice, but a good number of the people who worked for him were not nice at all. Ask anybody who passed through the hands of SAVAK.

Third, a lot of Iranians thought he westernized too fast. You and I may think that dumb, but it doesn't matter, it's not our country. Khomeini may have been a jerk, but he was their jerk. They wanted him, they got him.
