RE: Software MPEG Encoding quality

You said: "Ligos' software can only encode at the quality that they designers built-in. If you set it at the highest quality, it will only give you that quality, you won't gain anything from waiting a longer period of time."

With image compression, esp. the asymmetric stuff like MPEG-2, aren't there parameters that dictate how much you can look (e.g. motion vectors or # of frames around this one to look)? So I had figured that you could simply increase those parameters to allow greater searches... or maybe I'm just stupid here and should learn how they actually do MPEG-2 encoding. Well in hardware, those parameters are set by the processing speed and your capture rate requirement. In software you should be able to throw all kinds of time at it, so I thought it should encode better.

With the 1.4 GHz Williamette processor due late this year/early next year, I think MPEG-2 software encoding goes real-time with room to spare...
