I never worry about fake Gucci bags or copied disks of Windows. As long as China is not a member of WTO there is absolutely nothing we can do to stop the PLA by financing itself through piracy (and I mean real piracy!). I love fake Rolexes and fake jewelry. The cheaper the better. I despise Gucci, Ives St. Laurent, and all that crowd. The very idea of American government's trying to enforce copyrights, trade marks, and design patents on foreigners revolts me. I remember when you could buy a new current addition of Samuelson's Economics (much of which was wrong) in Taiwan for $2 instead of the overcharge of $25 in the US. The Taiwan students would smuggle in copies of all their text books.
Knowledge to me is the common heritage of all mankind. Enforcing patents for life-saving drugs and textbook copyrights against the poor is simply wrong.
Nevertheless, I find the idea of the PLA selling CD's of American Rap Music for $1 amusing. I would hate to have that stopped.
I have had perfectly honorable relationships with Chinese business men for many years. I recently found myself in a very junior partnership with Richard Li, Ziang Zemin, David Wetherall, and Craig Barrett. I couldn't ask for better partners.
