joe,

Here's another important announcement to consider:
biz.yahoo.com

Adaptec placed the development and testing of 64-bit Ultra160 SCSI drivers on an aggressive timetable such that OEMs, channel customers and end users can be
assured of complete compatibility and reliability when Itanium processor-based systems begin to ship during the second half of this year. To address the need for
high-performance storage connectivity within such products, Adaptec will provide the industry with fully tested drivers that are optimized for 64-bit versions of all
major operating systems.

Adaptec's 64-bit drivers are currently embedded in the IA-64 Linux kernel and will be part of Microsoft's 64-bit version of Windows in March 2000.

SCSI is always employed in servers, not usually in gamer/home stuff. Did Adaptec commit to getting the 64-bit drivers for Sledgehammer? Oh, yeah - they need a 64-bit OS first.

Cheers, Eric

PS: When/if you start seeing commits on the OS from Microsoft, Sledgehammer could get more interesting - till then it's a "Don't care".
