re: "I know it is probably against your religion to buy anything with Intel in it...but why not get what you need rather than compromise."

You are probably correct at least until sometime after this summer but I may be forced, out of genuine need to buy an inteL (UGH!) based machine.

Barring that:

If I were running WinNT 4 or Win2k Pro, which laptops would be appropriate? I know very few vendors have provided the necessary APM drivers for NT in the past, but this is becoming less of an issue because of the release of Win2k (I assume Win2k has APM/ACPI support). The unit would be primarily used for programming (much of the time file-editing in the IDE in VC++), and Word Processsing -- both take advantage of power-management extensively. I almost bought a Toshiba Portege in the past because it had 4+ hours battery life (STANDARD BATTERY!), and had the power management drivers for NT. Would a Portege (or possibly a Tecra) be a good choice now too? What do you recommend? Dell? Gateway? Compaq <::shiver::> ?

Regards,

DARBES
