Elmer & Intel Investors - ADAPTEC is Preparing ITanium DRIVERS for its line of SCSI and Fibre Channel adapters !

"Adaptec Commits to Driver Support for Intel IA-64 Architecture Across All Major Operating Systems
Drivers to Support All Major Operating Systems Optimized

"

Looks like the hardware infrastructure guys are ALSO GETTING BEHIND ITanium/IA64 in a big way.

Yet another indication of the support for the Intel IA64 platform ! And these guys don't add support unless there is a "promising" market !

Adaptec Commits to Driver Support for Intel IA-64 Architecture Across All Major Operating Systems
Drivers to Support All Major Operating Systems Optimized
for Itanium(TM) Processor

MILPITAS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 2, 2000-- Adaptec, Inc. (Nasdaq:ADPT - news) today announced that its Ultra160 SCSI product line will support the Itanium(TM) processor, the first in Intel's IA-64 processor line.

Adaptec placed the development and testing of 64-bit Ultra160 SCSI drivers on an aggressive timetable such that OEMs, channel customers and end users can be assured of complete compatibility and reliability when Itanium processor-based systems begin to ship during the second half of this year. To address the need for high-performance storage connectivity within such products, Adaptec will provide the industry with fully tested drivers that are optimized for 64-bit versions of all major operating systems.

Adaptec's 64-bit drivers are currently embedded in the IA-64 Linux kernel and will be part of Microsoft's 64-bit version of Windows in March 2000. As an executive member of Project UDI -- a multi-vendor consortium aimed at developing a Uniform Driver Interface -- Adaptec is also testing and validating 64-bit Ultra160 SCSI UDI drivers with several operating systems, including UNIX, UnixWare, and Linux environments. This UDI driver is also targeted for Project Monterey, a 64-bit operating system developed by IBM and SCO.

Since Adaptec uses a common API for SCSI and Fibre Channel drivers, the company will be able to provide unmatched compatibility to its customers quickly as IA-64-based systems requiring such connectivity emerge in the marketplace.

``By having engaged with Intel on IA-64 at an early stage, Adaptec continues its long tradition of excellence in providing fully tested software drivers and announcing them when they are ready for customers to deploy,' said Lee Caswell, director of Adaptec's OEM Solutions Group. ``We consider the debut of the IA-64 family to be a key event in Intel-based server evolution and Adaptec is prepared to provide the storage I/O bandwidth required by the generation of high-performance systems that these 64-bit microprocessors will enable.'

``Adaptec continues to demonstrate its commitment to the Intel Architecture with its high-end performance storage I/O capabilities for the IA-64 platform,' said Abhi Talwalkar, General Manager of Intel's Server Product Division. ``We will continue to work closely with Adaptec as it continues to develop Ultra320 SCSI, InfiniBand(TM) and Fibre Channel solutions optimized for the Itanium processor.'
