[SDL Introduces High Power Amplifiers for DWDM, Metro Free-Space Transmission And CATV Applications]

SAN JOSE, Calif., March 2 /PRNewswire/ -- SDL, Inc. today announced two new high-powered telecommunications grade optical amplifiers for use in dense wavelength division multiplex (DWDM) systems, metro free-space transmission and Cable TV (CATV) systems. The FM30-1 cladding pumped fiber optical amplifier is designed to provide 1 Watt of optical power through a single fiber and the FM30-8 amplifier is designed to provide 800 mW of optical power split among eight fibers. These amplifiers utilize SDL's proprietary 1 Watt multi-mode pump modules as well as the same fiber technology that is used in the SDL RL30 family of telecommunication qualified Raman fiber lasers.

"The FM30-1 is a major advance in high power optical amplification for telecommunications applications," said Gregory P. Dougherty, chief operating officer for SDL, Inc. "The FM30-1 offers up to 1 Watt (30 dBm) of output power versus typical telecom grade EDFAs which only provide up to 200 mW of output power. Cladding pumped fiber technology used in the FM30-1 is expected to provide higher optical power more economically than existing technology, further enabling networks to increase capacity. This 1 Watt fiber amplifier is designed for applications where high power amplification is required to extend transmission distance such as repeaterless submarine systems, single-span terrestrial links, or in metro free-space transmission applications."

The FM30-8 enables new advances in high power optical amplification architectures for broadband CATV distribution systems. Typically, a single erbium doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) is required to provide amplification to each receiver location. The FM30-8 allows the system designer to use one amplifier module to transmit amplified broadband data to eight receiver locations. This split output amplifier is designed for applications requiring the distribution of data to multiple locations such as broadband CATV transmission. The amplifiers are designed to provide up to 33 dB of gain in the 1545-1560 nm range, with a gain flatness of 1.5 dB and typical noise figure of 5 dB.

Dougherty continued, "The FM30 family relies on SDL's heritage of providing high-power solutions for optical communication applications. By leveraging our experience in providing extremely reliable, high-power optical amplification solutions, SDL is again bringing another exciting new fiber optic technology to the fiber communications market."
