Interesting comparison of Bradlees' 8.0% gain in February, 2000 with AMES gain of 2%. Having visited both stores each week, the difference seems to be the inventory of VCRs. Bradlees have more variety and AMES had fewer. Bradlees just restocked their VCRs but only RCA and GE, no foreign brands yet. The craze about the VCR started with deep discounting of the cheapest VCRs, but it attracted all the pent up desire to purchase for home entertainment. VCRs are considered obsoleted equipment since the introduction of DVD. The new designs of VCRs , however, has tuner signal amplifier and digital signal processing, so, the market is still very receptive of the product. Next time, if the manufacturers promote, AMES should stock more variety. This is still a hot product since most households have to upgrade their old VCRs.
