I once saw a stop aptly described as hanging fruit waiting for the market maker to pluck. I use mental stops based on trendlines.

Another observation I've made is that frequently before a significant move, the market makers will take the bid down to clean out stops and accumulate shares. This should be accounted for in your stop level if you are expecting a good move.
