Tech, Telecom Rebound
Lifts Hong Kong Shares

An INTERACTIVE JOURNAL News Roundup

Hong Kong stocks jumped 2% on rekindled buying interest in
telecommunications and high-tech stocks amid healthy liquidity. But most
other stock markets around the Asian-Pacific region closed mixed Friday.

As investors in Hong Kong were beginning to digest the biggest-ever
corporate merger in Asia excluding Japan, investment houses started to
issue "buy" recommendations for Pacific Century CyberWorks and Cable
& Wireless HKT. The rise in these shares also boosted the Hang Seng
index.

Tokyo stocks fell, dragged down by active
selling of telecommunications and select
technology issues such as Sony.

Shares in Australia and Singapore finished mixed. The Australian index
rose to a record high, bolstered by steep rises in News Corp. and Telstra,
but declining issues led advancers. In Singapore the key index edged up on
selective buying in technology stocks even as the broader market
weakened on profit-taking.

South Korean shares closed mixed, but the main index finished higher on
aggressive foreign buying in blue chips.

Taiwan shares finished slightly higher as political uncertainty ahead of the
presidential elections March 18 kept many investors on the sidelines.

Philippine shares closed higher as bargain hunters continued to accumulate
select blue chips that suffered heavy losses in recent sessions.

Malaysian shares finished higher on a combination of retail investor buying
and program-buying by foreign funds.

Indonesian stocks closed mixed, with late buying in cigarette blue chips
lifting the broader index into positive territory.

China's stock markets closed narrowly mixed as the broader market
continued to consolidate amid moderate trading volumes.

Indian stocks fell on continued selling in cyclicals and consumer stocks
following the federal budget announcement Tuesday.

Thai shares ended down on speculation concerning Bangkok Bank's
recapitalization plans, ahead of the bank's official announcement later
Friday.

In dollar terms at 6 a.m. EST, the Asian-Pacific sector of the Dow Jones
Global Indexes fell 1.27 to 122.23 Friday, after gaining 0.11 Thursday.
The Dow Jones World Stock Index fell 0.45 to 245.02, after rising 1.31
the previous session.

Property and casualty insurance and publishing issues were among the
Dow Jones Global index leaders whilst consumer electronics and toy
stocks were the laggers.
