I can't figure out what is real and what is not in this company. Barron's coverage is clearly the best thing that has ever happened.

On the surface, everything about this company hits all the right spots, but anytime I look closer, all sorts of funny things seem to come out.

1. Take the earnings figures. If I understand what is going on, the +ve earnings all came from the sale of its old business and broadcast BW in NY. This immediately makes this company a lot weaker than a casual glance indicates. This item is non-recurring.

2. The www.speedia.com site. It looks nice and ok. Haven't really tried the services, but it looks like what www.omnibrowse.com was doing before it was bought out by mobile.msn.com. Much of it has been done before, MSN is unlikely to support PALM, but if it has email, or supports http browsing, any PALM device should work with mobile.msn.com.

Let's do a simple DD.
a. current earnings growth : -ve
b. new products (speedia.com) : +ve
c. shares outstanding : hard to say, couldn't fine any info. Anyone here knows?
d. Leader. Iffy. omnibrowse.com did it before, mobile.msn.com is probably the current leader by subscriber base. But no doubt PALM will push speedia. +ve.
e. Institutional ownership. I see %2 from dec99.

f. Market Directon. ++++. Being in the hottest industry (wireless) in the longest bull market is going to help this.

But I wish I could feel better about this stock. I was sure it was going to be another great one, but I'm not that comfortable with it.

My feeling is that anyone who has done enough DD and still is long on this stock must have some knowledge that I don't because I can't see why this is a compelling story.

As for shorting, I think anyone foolhardy enough to try to short anything in a bull-market for tech stocks (especially wireless) is liable to be in for a rude shock.

Good luck everyone. May all your trades show a profit.
