The market would view any slow growth acquisition very, very negatively.

I agree Paul. I don't think absorption of Seagate by Veritas is the solution. I'm sure that the Veritas people are second-guessing the deal they made with Seagate originally. Did they give up too much of the company? Should they have made a cash deal? The riff-raff over on Yahoo! seem obsessed with their hatred of Steve Luczo and give him no credit for orchestrating this unbelievable creation of wealth for Seagate shareholders.

If potential acquirers are being thrown around, I think that a company who would benefit from an association with Veritas would be a natural. I always have wondered if a foreign company domiciled in a country with different capital gains treatment would find Seagate appetizing for its hidden assets. Who this would be, I haven't a clue.

On the other hand, if Veritas is really worth what the market is paying for it (I have my doubts), then maybe Seagate should keep the brunt of their shares for the long pull. I personally believe that the inequity of the tax situation I mentioned in the last paragraph will be resolved by a worldwide elimination of taxes on corporations. It is just too easy in today's linked world to set up your business in a tax-friendly country. The Economist had some interesting words on this very topic a few months ago. Well, I'm really getting away from the topic, so I should quit but maybe I should rethink my rapidly approaching sell target on Seagate and keep holding.
