Long-distance calls disrupted again as winds damage tower

For the second time this week, phone service in El Paso and Teller counties was interrupted.
A damaged microwave radiowave transmitter tower caused Thursday's failure, which disrupted about 64,000 long-distance calls and some 911 service in the eastern portions of El Paso County as well as Woodland Park, Fairplay, Buena Vista and Leadville, said U S West spokesman Abel Chavez.
Local calls were not affected, Chavez said.
The phone service disruption included Limon, Peyton, Calhan, Salida, Howard, Cripple Creek and Green Mountain Falls, U S West spokeswoman Anna Osborn told The Associated Press. Park and Lincon counties also were affected, Osborn said.
The trouble began at 11:35 a.m. and was corrected by 5:45 p.m., Chavez said.
Several television stations aired warnings that 911 service was down and directed anyone with an emergency to call officials in their area or go to the nearest fire station.
