This week's computerworld has a well done feature on ecommerce vendors, including a table of leading vendors and case studies... they have HP, IBM, MSFT, Oracle, and Sun. Neither DELL nor CPQ got a mention.

Be real interesting to see how things shake out here. It's possible there's going to be a move away from the overpriced and (over-hyped) Sun equipment toward intel based equipment. Dell can be a factor here: at my company (I work for a startup that just launched our site two weeks ago) we're evaluating servers with two goals in mind - 1) a good price and 2) making the most out of space at our hosting facility. We have a Dell rack server (4 inch form factor) and two 1U servers we just got in from IBM and Network Engines (IBM is oem-ing the Network Engines server, so for all practical purposes they're identical). Here's the problem for Dell - the servers from their competitors are smaller (better use of space), well designed for web-farming, and just as powerful. The only advantage I can find with the Dell is that it has redundant power supplies (not much of an advantage if you've got a farm).

As an investor and customer, I'd like to see Dell come out with a 1U server soon. Maybe they already have? I don't know. But given the price and space advantage of the IBM/NE servers, we'll be returning that bulky Dell 4U next week.
