It seems as if just being aware of a broad range of trends and choosing companies that other SI'ers also think are hot (and can explain why in a big picture senses) that have good funding and sound management, and then just LEAVING THEM ALONE is the safest method... the experiment here bears that out.

I do think this was proof that better ideas in this community can help lead to superior returns: if the ideas are sought and interpreted intelligently.

A financial adviser friend of mine is obsessed with unloved and undervalued companies (not necessarily a good trait). We have both liked Hummingbird for some time. But now could be its day in the sun. It's breaking out, and its new lines of business should catch fire. I think maybe on the way to $150!
