In some ways it's kind of sad because DSL is cutting edge deployment today, BUT it's been around for a decade. Kind of an unusual situation in tech world.

I can think of one thing that's a lot sadder: ISDN. That technology was "ready" for about a decade (unused capabilities sitting idle in many a #5ESS) before it finally saw limited deployment. Europe was way ahead of the USA with ISDN, but fortunately now they are migrating to a better solution: ADSL.
