JillyBeana, "La Yuma"

. . . . is what the Cubans humorously call the United States of America. It is their affectionate reference to the "Promised Land." When I say to a stranger down there that I am from "La Yuma," invariably he/she <GGGG>, LOL, and finally ROFLH(his/her)AO. Sometimes they go directly to the floor, howling over the fact that an American would be in on their lingo.

As an aside, every single Elian Gonzales demonstration in Cuba is government orchestrated. Almost all the people at such demonstrations are required to go as an alternative to going to work. The joke in Cuba among the kids is "Hey Elian, if you come back, make sure you bring me a mountain bike."
