I wonder what would have happened if somewhere along the way, MSFT had decided to do an OS aimed at meeting the needs of high end customers without regard to the rest of the market.

Well, they kinda did (late) by acquiring the VMS guy. And somehow Bill Gates promises through that, 'a better Unix than Unix'.

I'm pretty sure it goes beyond things 'cultural' at M$, and goes instead directly to things architectural. The phone company runs on Unix (not VMS) for a reason.
