JC - OK, you have now made it so easy that I have no excuse for not clicking the button. Also thanks for a fascinating discussion, which may not interest all of the readers of this thread but certainly has caught the attention of some, based on the PM I have been getting.

Understanding the history, the unique combination of things that SUNW brought to the industry, and the past and current roles of the other players is important in understanding where SUNW may go in the future, and why...

In particular, the "walk down memory lane" regarding DEC in the '70s and '80s highlighted for me some of the major flaws in MSFT's game plan. The MSFT guy I mentioned earlier left the company not because he didn't have satisfying work - he loved what he was doing and had a relatively free hand - and certainly not because of money. What made him join MSFT in the first place back in 1985 was the sense that he could help power an underground revolution against the stifling weight of companies like IBM. But somehow, MSFT went from being the rebel alliance to being the empire... He woke up one day and realized that he was now part of a company that was creating the same environment that he had first joined up to disrupt. The advent of open software development, Linux, and the groundswell of real excitement in the culture that movement created finally popped the light bulb on - that world was the one he had envisioned in 1985, and MSFT had "gone over to the dark side"... I wonder how many other talented softees feel the same way.
