Yes - marketing. But MSFTs marketing methods are also used elsewhere. What MSFT was the first to do, was to create a company based on selling software licenses, and it has extended this with the most unbelievable license "agreements" I've ever seen, most of them illegal in Denmark, but that's another story.

But people don't want license agreements. Have you every read a license agreement when you bought a mobile phone? From buying programs, we are now turning to buying services and information. And MSFT is not the inventor of that.
If MSFT succeeds in this, they are either a great investor company, or they abuse their market dominance. I don't think we can disagree on that. What is the PE of other american investor companies?

P.S.; Have you ever read the part of your license agreements that is written above the button saying "I agree"?
How many of you pay for using shareware like WinZIP after trial period expiration?
