In this scenario, the knife would probably have belonged to a member of the retarded man's family, and so could still be a clue.

It wouldn't, of course, be difficult to find out whether any retarded adult lives near the spot where Suzanne was found: the neighbors would know. Or lived nearby: if his parents were smart, they'd have moved since the murder took place.

It would also be useful to talk to someone who worked on the Best Buddies program with Suzanne; ideally with the person she drove home that night. Evidently Suzanne didn't say anything to her about an appointment, or she'd have told the police, but if one of the buddies were attracted to Suzanne, she may have known about it.
