A question about backing up programs:

Is it practical to zip a program folder and it's sub directories, say Excel or Word, and save it to virtual drive for backup purposes? In the event of a hard disk failure would the virtual backup be restorable? Or would the software only work if restored from a complete backup of the system or the original CD's?

I ask because my backup resources are limited in my current system. I'm thinking of using a free virtual drive to cover myself. I've always wondered about backing up programs because of the copy protection measures that may be in place.

Thanks,
Esteban
