The naval analogy: Someone mentioned that the contest between Intel and AMD reminds him of the Battle of Midway in which the U.S. defeated the Japanese despite having less aircraft carriers. I'd suggest also looking at what Nelson achieved with his smaller frigates against the massive Spanish warships. There is much to be said for being focused and having a flexible production line. I can't wait to see what AMD will accomplish in the second half of 2000 when Dresden starts producing copper 1GHz+ Athlons in volume.

The analysts who think a 1GHz PC is a gimmick are fooling themselves. Sure, no mainstream corporation will need a 1GHz PC anytime soon, but everyone out of college a few years will want the fastest desktop available to impress their friends when they get together to play games. 1GHz PCs are going to quickly become a status symbol for people under 35.
