Odds favor the kitchen knife as the tip will break easier than a utility knife.

I'm inclined to agree. And, yes, it's possible that Buddy could have taken a knife from the church kitchen. But it'd have been much easier to take one from his parents' kitchen, if he lived at home.

The first wound may have been through the back and to the heart. Is this possible with a five inch blade?

Technically, I think it would be, even from the back. But as I understand it, none of the 17 wounds was inflicted that low on Suzanne's torso.
