Computer Sales in Asia Pacific Seen Reaching New Highs, BT Says By Cheok Soh Hui
Singapore, March 6 (Bloomberg) -- Sales of personal computers in the Asia Pacific, excluding Japan, will likely reach new highs in the next three years, growing by 23 percent annually to 32 million units by 2003, the Singapore Business Times reported, citing Dane Anderson, vice president for computing systems at market researcher IDC. Sales are expected to grow a slower 17 percent a year to top $36.5 billion in the same period because of falling personal computer prices. Last year, International Business Machines Corp., or IBM, led computer sales in Asia Pacific with an 8.4 percent market share, followed by Compaq Computer Corp. with 7.3 percent, Legend Holdings Ltd. with 7.1 percent, Samsung Electronics Co. with 5.7 percent and Hewlett Packard Co. with 5.4 percent, the paper reported.
Shipments of personal-computers in Asia reached a record last year, with a total of 14.1 million PCs shipped in the region, excluding Japan.
