The year 1999 was a watershed in the history of communications: A moment of transition in which the telephone (epitome of 19th century invention) and the computer (arguably the 20th century's greatest achievement) finally merged into a single platform. At this juncture, it would be appropriate to share the thoughts of some of the individuals and companies, such as I-Link, that most closely identify with this convergence.

My request was simple: Talk to us in your own words. Give us your take on the trends, threats, and opportunities facing your computer telephony (CT) business, over the next six to twelve months.

Here are the results. For those capable of reading between the lines, these short - and in some cases, provocative - statements provide a roadmap for the computer telephony industry in 2000.

TOMORROW'S COMMUNICATION SERVICES:

"Communications in the new millennium will be all about value-added services. These services will be provided by an application driven interactive networks. Today's networks will have converged so that there will only be the Net, public or private, providing high-bandwidth packet communications from your pocket, palm or portable to anyone, anywhere. The emphasis will shift to services that enable us to more easily communicate and to better manage our communications.

[I-Link is in this space with their pure IP technology and IP Network, with V-Link 3.0 unified messaging platform]

"Communications in the new millennium won't just be cheaper and faster - they will be better. The communications industry is trending toward a low-cost, high-quality, universally available product that will probably be available for a flat monthly rate. Services are fast becoming the differentiating element in customer satisfaction and profitability."

[I-link is in this space with unified messaging platform of V-Link 3.0 and other web-based applications.]

"These new services will require the ability to rapidly deploy new applications on a flexible, reusable platform that can simultaneously support multiple applications."

[I-Link is in this space with their GateLink open APIs that allow others to develop applications for rapid and cost effective deployment on I-Link's IP Network.]

"The CT server is already changing the way people think about and use communications technology. It provides a standard framework for CT systems- meaning freedom to choose from a wide range of applications and technologies, and to enjoy independence from the network infrastructure. Multiple applications can share media processing and network resources. Applications can simultaneously support legacy enterprise infrastructure like PBXs and next-generation IP solutions like gatekeepers. By offering maximum choice and flexibility, the CT server enables a best-in-class solution: The best applications, the best technology, the best infrastructure, and the best integration."

[I-Link is in this space with it's Communications Engine (CE) and the "soft switch" technology that allows it to have the "switch less" pure IP network today. I-Link's network addresses the QoS and capacity issues of IP networks through it's own IP technology. The applications layer of GateLink APIs allow other to develop and deploy applications on I-Link's network, at very low cost of entry fast speed of deployment]

" The convergence of the voice and data networks will provide for higher bandwidth, more network-resident processing power, thereby enabling natural voice interfaces. This will make advanced communication services more accessible. CT is finally coming out of its black box in the back of the telecom closet and into the mainstream of communications by becoming a more responsive, application-driven interactive customer service technology residing on the network edge."

[I-link is in this space with it's pure IP Integrated Access Network, enabled by INDAVO-I-Link's Integrated Access Device (IAD), which resides at the customer premises. The future enhancements to V-Link 3.0 include the natural voice interfaces that will make the enhanced communication services more accessible.]

"A hot area of opportunity in communications is becoming the hosting of services. Service providers can offer integrated applications that deliver real value to their business subscribers - who will find out that communications features aren't just for telcos anymore. Telecom hosting operates telecom applications from within the public network edge. It's a concept whose time has come. The web has given businesses a completely new view of customer contact and employee productivity functions. Web-enabled applications have provided new ways for businesses to differentiate their services and gain a competitive edge. Businesses will expect the same opportunities and competitive advantages with telecom services."

[I-Link is in this space with several web-based services, some are developed and some are under development. Some of the web-based applications are: TalkFree for 24/7-customer support, Virtual Call Centers, web-based audio/video conferencing, Call2Care alert service, Internet Call Waiting etc.]

"The market potential is huge. An estimated eight million U.S. businesses are targeted as growth companies (Source: Yankee Group). Businesses with their own infrastructure are looking for ways to lower costs, improve operational efficiencies, accommodate growth, and meet changing needs. Large organizations are expected to increase their spending on telecom in the next two years by 56 percent (Source: Schema)."

[I-Link is ready with it's IP network and other enabling products. I-Link is out of its "quite" period and is now free to partner with others, to fully realize it's own growth potential in the growing telecom equipment and services market.]

I-Link's application driven interactive IP network, made possible by its CE and soft switch technology, offers the users an exciting array of new services far beyond the basic connectivity we enjoy today. I, for one, can't wait to get there. I look forward to a world where my personal applications and the applications in our business can drive the network to interact with our customers and business partners in the way that best serves them.

I-Link's Integrated Access Network will change the way we work, play and live in the new millennium.

..............E-COMMERCE.

"In the near future, it will become common knowledge among web-site owners that live support is an absolutely necessary component of doing business on the Net. While at first, many more e-Businesses will automate their e-mail customer support, we will soon start to see customers realizing that it's important to add telephone, chat, VoIP, voicemail and fax communication options. The global nature of e-Business will require accommodations for globally distributed multi-lingual customer service representatives. In 2000 there are likely to be over 100 vendors attempting to provide solutions for individual aspects of these market needs. However, a handful of vendors will emerge with complete, scalable enterprise grade platforms for these mission critical operations."....Ari Sonesh, President and CEO, CosmoCom, Inc.

[I-Link's web-based "TalkFree" product is offered free to the web-site hosts, and it provides live support to the web-site customers with quality voice communications. I-Link is diligently working on its International network to embrace the global nature of customer support in e-business.]
