Re: etrade confirms - barring problems they are near-instantaneous except first 20-30 minutes of day, when they take 20 minutes from open and slowly get up to speed by 10:00 EST or so. This has been this way as long as I can remember.

My main gripe with Datek (aside from simply refusing to depend on the web for trading) is their order routing. In a fast issue fills are not fast/reliable enough to open/close position unless you are going the wrong way. The fact that a marketable limit order can sit unfilled for minutes still amazes me. Maybe when the ECN's autoexecute when they create crossed markets in ALL nms stocks this will change....
