Michael: A major discussion on Alta Vista just concluded on UK prime time TV show on BBC. It consisted of a filmed piece on the whole AV issue, interviews with Merril Lynch (Europe) analyst about AV strategy, and interviews with UK head of Alta Vista and one other from AV. Then a live studio panel discussion consisting of a very well informed consultant, head of the internet consumers group and head of screaming.net (which offers free connections evenings and weekends). Then there was a long discussion of Alta Vista by UK leading female presenter asking the questions. Strangely, she, the consultant and the screaming.net guy referred to Alta Vista as being backed by COMPAQ. Nobody mentioned CMGI.

The general consenus was that AV was making a big strategic push to be in the top 3 portals. Lots of caution about the wisdom of their strategy.

The AV guys said that if a user is inactive for 5 minutes the connection will be cut off! He also said the price was a range from œ35-50 start up fee and then œ10-25 per year - so this is already different from the announcement. Best to wait to see the details.

It is amazing the amount of publicity - it is on par with the AOL/Time Warner deal or Windows 2000 launch and is a main news story not simply a business news story.
