The only difference I can see between Pat Robertson and the Ayatollah Khomeini is that Robertson is not in a position to impose his medieval superstitions on anyone else. If he were in such a position, I'm sure he would impose with a vigor that would make a mullah blush.

The Republicans have been dancing this little dance with the religious loonies for a long time. They want the loony vote, but they also know that they can't give in to the loonies on any significant platform issues, because the positions of the loonies are totally unacceptable to mainstream Americans, who would rather see government and the churches well separated and well outside their bedrooms. So the loonies are always disappointed in the Republicans, and are always trying unsuccessfully to translate their votes into platform points.

GWB's arrangement with Robertson is a new way of dealing with this situation: making a deal and then refusing to tell the voters what it is. It's not a very bright maneuver - there was obviously a quid pro quo (there always is), and not announcing it leaves all kinds of speculations open - but brightness does not appear to be GWB's strong suit.

As I usually do at this point in an election year, I'm wondering if these guys really are the best America has to offer.
