Elmer - Re: "If Intel's 1 GHz part has lower Vcc than 1.8 Volts I am inclined to believe that AMD has completely shot their wad here and Intel is the one with headroom"

AMD's Gigger appears to be nothing more than an OVERCLOCKED AthWiper with an incredible JACKED UP VOLTAGE of 1.8 volts - as you noted. It requires a Nuclear Meltdown Preventive Massive Thermal Brick - to help cool the 65 WATT Power Dissipation !!!

That 65 WATT Power Dissipation !!! is MORE than about 1/3 of the LIGHT BULBS in my home !

This 1.8 volts EXCEEDS the maximum permitted Vcc of the original 500 - 700 MHz AthWiper (1.7 Volts) .

Clearly, AMD has long ago reached the maximum capability of the AthWIper design and 0.18 micron process - and now they are simply BRUTE FORCING devices into a speed range where Reliability will be a major issue.

This is clearly a desperate act by a desperate company.
