Dave - what you say about the subjective nature of the admissions process really rings true for me. I'm absolutely convinced that it played a key role in my being accepted to college. Looking back, I feel that the admissions people who interviewed me and reviewed my essay could just "tell" that "this guy's a born engineer". You wouldn't know this from straight multiple-guess SAT tests (where I was kind of mediocre compared to some of my classmates.) I don't know if luck played a big role in happening on admissions people who were particularly competent or not, possibly that also.

It puts the lego-thing in an interesting light.
