Regarding the full duplex problem: You will not experience the problem on a lightly loaded server. But try to copy just one huge file with xcopy with nobody else connecting to the server, and the problem appears. There are many servers out there running full duplex that could get faster if they were changed to half duplex. (We changed a few of our installations when we found out...)

I think it is sad, that you cannot put up just one server and just have it run, instead of buying clusters all the time... NT was extremely bad: You could not install a printer without rebooting!! (Since you had to re-install the service pack). But OK - you could have the printer sharing on a server of its own and the people just couldn't print for 10 minutes when you rebooted. I hope the service packs for Win2K will be more intelligent and do not need to be reinstalled for each printer change.

It is true that Linux 2.2 does not exploit many processors in one machine at a time as good as WinNT does, but didn't we talk clustering in the first part of your message? PLEASE remember this list:

top500.org

There has been several Linux computers on this list. Right now I can only identify one, and that is the one named "Avalon cluster". There's no Windows NT or Windows 2000 in the list... There are several "self-made" clusters and also one SGI cluster. I'm not sure whether they run Linux.

So, in real life, Linux is faster. (And, I can tell you, it's much easier to earn money by selling Linux solutions than MS solutions!!)
