NEW YORK (CBS.MW) -- Shares of Network Solutions rocketed in pre-market trading Tuesday after VeriSign announced intentions to buy the Internet domain registrar in a stock deal valued at approximately $21 billion.

The stock (NSOL: news, msgs) exploded 81 7/8, or 23 percent higher, to 442 1/2 over the Island ECN. Verisign (VRSN: news, msgs) will pay 2.15 of its shares for each Network Solution stock. Based on Monday's closing prices, that values Network Solution shares at $531.99 each. Verisign's stock fell 20 7/16, or 8.3 percent, to 227. The companies said it expects the deal to close in the third quarter of 2000.
