Birim Drilling Outlines Gold Zones at Opon
MONTREAL, CANADA--Birim Goldfields Inc. is pleased to announce the results of its latest drilling program carried out on the Dunkwa concession in Ghana.
A 17 hole (1,075 metres) reverse circulation drilling program has recently been completed on the Opon prospect which occurs at the Dunkwa property's southern boundary, adjacent to the Bogosu mining lease (Golden Star Resources/Anvil Mining). The Opon prospect is directly on strike with Bogosu's northernmost operational open pit, 2 kilometres to the south.
As indicated in Birim's last press release (February 14, 2000), this program was planned to follow up on previous trenching and drilling. All of the holes were drilled toward the east at minus 60 degrees, on four fences 50 metres apart, collared on 25 metres centres. Holes were sampled at one metre intervals and representative two kilogram samples were submitted to SGS Laboratories in Tarkwa, Ghana, for standard 50g fire assay analysis.
Drilling has defined a broad structure dipping shallowly at between 25o and 40o to the northwest. The latest results indicate a higher grade payshoot plunging gently to the north within the plane of the main zone. Also, hole BOR-29 has intersected what is believed to be a second parallel structure, the surface projection of which would outcrop further to the east.

Sixteen of the seventeen holes drilled intersected gold mineralization, all in oxide. Significant results include:

A 30 hole (1,800 metres) reverse circulation drilling program is planned, and will be begun within the next two weeks to trace extensions of the main zone both northward and southward, as well as to test the parallel structure discovered to the east during this drilling.
Reverse circulation drilling will also be carried out on the Mansi West prospect located approximately eight kilomtres north of Opon. This target lies on a splay of the main Ashanti trend. This initial program will include 30 holes (1,200 metres) drilled on three fences, 200 metres apart and collared on 20 metres centres. Mansi West is one of several targets on the Dunkwa property which have yet to be drill tested. Further drilling will also be carried out at Asikuma, Chirbra and Chirbra North in due course.
Birim's president, Denis Simoneau, was quick to outline the significance of this discovery at Opon, saying that "Once again, the Ashanti trend is delivering the goods and more pleasant surprises are expected. One good thing about the current depressed level of exploration activity is that those few companies which are active can take advantage of very competitive drilling prices allowing each dollar to go that much further. Also, while it is still too early to start counting ounces at Opon, the Company realizes that this target has now been upgraded and is confident that further drilling will extend the Opon Gold Zone."
