PS2 Internet Access Via Cell Phone 3/7/00 07:52

PlayStation2 owners "will soon be able to use the machine to access the Internet via cellular phones," Sony Computer Entertainment's President Ken Kutaragi has promised.
Speaking to The Nihon Keizai Shimbun, Kutaragi revealed that users will be able to order goods or play games against online opponents without using a modem or a fixed phone line, simply by connecting a portable phone to their PlayStation2 console.

Kutaragi predicts that SCE will enable PlayStation2 to be linked to a high-speed cable television network beginning in 2001. This means that cellular phones can be used to link the next-gen console to the Internet until the cable TV network comes on stream.

SCE's president says that PlayStation2's multipurpose port means "the service can be started immediately after sales begin of special software and a cable to connect a portable phone with PlayStation2." A modem is not required for cell phones to access the Internet as the system handles digital signals and so is no need for a modem to convert to and from analog signals.

Kutaragi finally promised the Nihon Keizai Shimbun, "The data transmission speed of the portable phone system will reach 64 kilobits per second by the end of this year and will soon be double that again, which is comparable to the level of digital subscriber lines."
