FL, You are kind of between the rock and the hard place. There are really no discount firms that give decent rebates on shorts any more. Aufhauser did before it became cheaparsed Ameritrade.

Merrill and DLJ give the best rebates by far. Aufhauser used to be able to pay it because they cleared through Pershing, a DLJ sub. I have been able to negotiate great commish discounts with both firms, but you have to remember that at one time I was paying out $25 million a year in commissions. If I walked in with my own accounts today, guaranteed I wouldn't be paying the rates I'm paying now.

However, you may find both firms somewhat friendly to an active trader, so I would at least talk to them. I know many people who beat Schwab and Quick & Reilly with Merrill. But you aren't likely to get near a Brown & Co. or Ameritrade commissions.
