To add to the Dow?s problems, oil topped $33 a barrel, posing an
additional threat to the ?old economy? stocks that depend so much
on fossil fuels. The Nasdaq remained positive for most of the day,
but the one-two punch of a collapsing Dow and soaring oil prices
finally dragged the Nasdaq lower toward the close.

According to preliminary figures, the Dow plunged 374.47 to
9796.03, the Nasdaq fell 57.04 to 4847.81, and the S&P 500 dropped
2.5% to 1355.62.

Top-performing sectors included gold and silver ($XAU.X), up 6.9%,
integrated oils ($XOI.X), up 6.7%, oil services ($OSX.X), up 6.5%,
