You haven't posted recently so I don't know if you are still on SI and I have no other way to contact you. One tip that I'd add to Patrick Slevin's many sensible suggestions: During the parade there are very few places where one can cross Fifth Avenue. It's very similar to being in New Orleans during Mardi Gras and being trapped on the wrong side of the street from your destination.

Securing a subway map is a good idea. For example, one can go to Times Square, on the west side of the city, and take a shuttle across to Grand Central, on the east side of the city. The demarcation point for east and west is Fifth Avenue, where the parade is being held. So it is possible to bypass the parade when you wish to do so with minimal agony. (Unlike New Orleans!)
