"Color makes Palm IIIc a winner"

"Considering all the color WinCE PDAs, the Palm
IIIc is very late to the party. But it's a winner
because:

- It's a Palm and they've got all the market-
and mind-share

- Battery and display technology finally make
it feasible

- It's the coolest thing to lay on the
conference table since the StarTac

The introduction of the IIIc marks the beginning of
the end for monochrome PDAs. By the end of
2001, I predict that virtually all new PDAs will be
color and that monochrome will linger in only the
low-end entry models. Even they will eventually go
the color route, just as monochrome laptops are
unknown today.

When color laptops came out, I said, "I don't need
one. Monochrome does everything I want it to do,
and the color is just a distraction. Besides, I want
the longer battery life and lighter weight." Those
words are silly and anti-progressive in retrospect,
and defenders of monochrome PDAs are likewise in
peril of eating their words.

Palm's move to color is being dictated by the
applications -- new ones that are being designed for
color, such as the Kodak PalmPix camera, map
software and more. The first couple of generations
of color Windows CE PDAs were pointless -- all
they did was suck down batteries at an alarming
rate.
