The Speednet deal requires some political clout in order to obtain the frequency allocations for the wireless part of the Speednet ISP. I thought that Son might have had this covered. Then, Yahoo Japan could have wound up in some sort of alliance with the venture as well as ETrade perhaps. On the other hand, as a pure ISP perhaps Tepco did not want to be tied to any specific portals or vendors of services. It's a complex World and I think that Tepco may not understand all of the ramifications yet. Or it could be just a negotiating ploy that will eventually be resolved. I wondered about Microsoft's involvement myself, but they are providing software solutions for settop boxes and perhaps this could be a factor. If this deal blows up, I will be very disappointed, but it will not be fatal. Softbank's diversity of investments means that any one or two poor results can be offset by many successes.
